HNGU offers Post Graduate Programme in Hospital
Management, which is a two years full time programme and
after the completion of this programme, the degree awarded
would be Masters in Hospital Management (MHM). This
programme has been recognized by Department of Health and
Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat.
Objectives:
1. To develop deeper understanding of multi disciplinary and
multidimensional nature of hospital
management.
2. To develop strategic thinking and critical awareness of
their management style and constantly weigh its
appropriateness to deal with various professional groups,
skilled and unskilled staff, patient and their
families and members of the community.
3. To Utilize various management concepts/techniques/tools
and resources to improve the functioning of
the hospital management system.
4. To provide management education to medical professional
and alike working in the field of health
services administration.
5. To equip executives concerned with health administration
with up-to-date knowledge about
management and to develop relevant skills and attitudes; and
to prepare them to apply modern
management techniques in managing various types of Hospital.
Introduction:
The Hospital & Heathcare Industry world over is
growing at an unparalleled rate. It has opened up new vistas
of employment for a large number of trained professionals.
The average Indian hospital still continues to be
underdeveloped.
Most of Our government hospitals are functioning in
old dilapidated buildings and lack modern diagnostic and
therapeutic equipments, proper emergency services, critical
care areas, essential pharmaceuticals and supplies, referral
support and resources, CSSD, laundry, dietary, nursing
services etc. High hospital infection rates and death rates
are very common. One reason may be that Hospital Management
is yet to be recognized as an important specialty. Further,
there is hardly any hospital policy for the management of
the government hospitals, which not only adversely affects
patient care but also leads to a situation of crisis every
now and then.
An aspiring hospital manager/administrator must have
knowledge of the hospital, its various stakeholders,
managerial and communication skills in addition to human
touch which is very important in hospital industry. A
postgraduate qualification, Master of Hospital Management (MHM),
Two years Post Graduate Programme will ensure the aspiring
managers' future in this promising industry.
Scope of MHM:
In recent times, health care concept of the people
have undergone a tremendous change which has lead to higher
expectations and an increased demand for high quality
medical care and facilities. Health/ Hospital Management is
the latest concept in the field of management and one of the
most lucrative and important career in the health sector.
Several corporate houses like Fortis, Wockhardt, Reliance
and Ranbaxy are venturing into hospital industry.
A career in Hospital Management involves ensuring
effective utilization of physical and financial resources of
the hospital as well as creating an organizational climate
beneficial to the growth and development of the personnel.
Professional services of trained manpower namely
Hospital administrators/ managers have now become essential
to manage hospitals and medical facilities. It is the
hospital administrators/ managers who manage hospitals,
outpatient clinics, hospices, drug-abuse treatment centers
etc. They would be responsible for overall patient care,
education, research and community health care associated
with the organization, and make sure that they confirm to
the rules of the Hospital.
MHM:
A Professional with the Degree of M.H.M can work as
Hospital superintendents, Hospital Administrator, Hospital
Manager, Deputy superintendents, Medical directors, Nursing
directors, Heads of departments and as Administrators with
substantial managerial responsibilities, Deans and Directors
of medical colleges,. Hospital manager will be responsible
for the overall organization and management of the hospital
to ensure its smooth functioning with the objective of
ensuring complete satisfaction.
The Curriculum
The medium of instruction of the course is English.
The course covers comprehensively all aspects of hospital
administration/management with particular emphasis on the
practical knowledge. The Department will use pedagogical
tools such as Lectures, Case Studies, Role-plays, Project
assignments, Presentations and seminars from practicing
managers in order to facilitate comprehensive and effective
learning.
The Academic Programme is as below:
The examination for the Master of Hospital
Management degree will be conducted by semester system. For
this purpose, the programme, is divided into four semesters
comprising of two years. Each semester will be of 12 to 14
working weeks.

Visits*
Hospital Visits:
Students have to visit a minimum of 3 Hospitals of
different category, Government Hospital, Trust Hospital,
Single specialty Hospital, and Corporate Hospitals and spend
around 50 hours which includes the visit time and the report
writing time and presentations of the visits. Evaluation
will be based on the attendance, reports and presentations
by the students. Atleast two of the Hospital should have
more than 100 beds. It will remain compulsory requirement
for every students to visit hospitals as per above.
