Goal

Commencement

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is the only one of its kind in north Gujarat.  The department was established in 2002 and has made steady of its existence. Since its inception, it has been producing well trained media professionals every year. The department boasts of an impressive list of alumni who are holding top positions in the industry. Taking a leap from being the media-training center, the department has now set its eyes on higher studies and research in the field of media and communication.

Master's  Programme  in Journalism and Mass Communication

This is Two year (four Semesters) Programme. The admission to this Programme  is available for those who have already done a recognised degree in any discipline. The focus of this Programme  is on developing deeper understanding of and research orientation towards mass communication process and the behaviour and functioning of communication media.

Mphil Programme  in Journalism and Mass Communication

This is a one-year (two Semesters) degree programme. Admission to this programme is based on merit of the entrance exam. The focus of this course is on giving the students conceptual inputs and research skills required to excel in the various fields of Mass Communication.

doctoral  Programme  in Journalism and Mass Communication

This is the most recent programme initiated in the department. The Doctoral programme was undertaken keeping in mind the need to appreciate and develop a sound knowledge base of the special conditions in which communication activities need to be undertaken in this state, to understand special communication behaviours of the people with respect to the communication messages and media; and several other problems faced by the practitioners of development communication

Activities

The activities reflecting the objectives and goal of the department are listed below:-

i. Quest for life long learning :

Continuous efforts are being made to impart time relevant knowledge and skills to the learners. Encouragement is given to the guest faculty to adopt innovative methods of teaching that will cater to the needs of learners at various levels of study.

ii. Stimulation of active learning:

Critical thinking through freedom of thought and expression can be developed by adopting an integrative and inclusive approach towards various disciplines.

v. Fostering research:

Students are motivated to take up research work which help in creating a mindset for inquiry and also inculcate an analytical attitude.

vi. Collaboration with industry:

A collaboration with industrial houses like Divya Bhaskar, Sandesh, Gujarat Samachar etc., by seeking their guidance, guest lectures etc. Field visits to industries are arranged.

vii. Social responsibility:

Students are sensitized about social, Political and environmental issues in an endeavor to find solutions that will benefit society as a whole. Positive role of modeling is provided in order to create responsible citizens.

viii. Creating interest in diverse fields:

In order to create interest in various fields for all round development of personality, extension activities are held such as publication of In-house newspaper “Shabdarpan”
