BMI 302: Linear Electronics

 

1. Diodes:

        Junctions diode, Break down diode, Tunnel diode and their characteristics. Photodiode and Light emitting diode and their uses. Diode as a switch. Diode used for half and full wave rectification of ac. Filters. Diode clipping, clamping and comparator circuits.

2. Transistor:

        BJT and its current components; Transistor as an amplifier; Transistor configurations and characteristics; Transistor as a switch. Photo transistor. Transistor as two port model and its hybrid model; Transistor h-parameters. Analysis of a Transistor amplifier circuit using h-parameters. Emitter follower. Comparison of transistor amplifier configuration. Common emitter with an emitter resistance. Darlington pair. Simplified common emitter and common collector calculations. Transistor biasing circuits operating point, bias stability a stability factors. Emitter bias. Bias compensation. Thermal run away.

3. Transistor Amplifier:

        Frequency response; RC coupled amplifier; emitter by pass capacitor for low frequency response; output distortion and noise. Cascading of CE-stages. Feedback amplifier: characteristic of negative feedback; voltage series feedback, current series feedback, current shunt feedback, voltage-shout feedback types transistor amplifiers. Effect of feedback on input/output impedances, voltage and current gain and band width.

4. Transistor Oscillators:

        Barkhausen criterion; positive feedback; frequency of oscillations; RC phase shift oscillator, Wein bridge oscillator, tuned circuits oscillator, Colpitts oscillator, Hartley oscillator, Crystal Oscillator.

5. Power Amplifier:

        Class A large signal power amplifier. Transformer coupled audio power amplifier; efficiency. Push Pull class B amplifier and class AB operation.

6. Regulated power supplies:

        Basic series voltage regulator and shunt voltage regulator transistorized circuits.
